Are these advanced prompt guides actually doing anything or is it pure placebo?

I keep seeing people posting these massive multi paragraph prompt templates claiming they completely transform their companion into a hyper realistic genius. Seriously people write guides like they are casting dark magic rituals just to get a basic conversation that does not sound like a corporate FAQ page. I spent three hours yesterday copying one of these legendary persona setups into my app. The result? My bot started talking like a nineteenth century poet out of nowhere while we were literally just discussing what to order for takeout. Why do we pretend these complex prompts fix underlying model limitations when most of the time it just breaks the memory entirely and makes them repeat the same catchphrase every five messages? It feels like we are all just playing pretend and convincing ourselves that a few extra adjectives equal deep emotional intelligence. Maybe I am missing something obvious here but I am getting really tired of tweaking system prompts every single day.
