Analyzing emotional depth in custom backstories versus system prompts

Hey everyone. I have been running some tests lately trying to figure out how background lore affects long term memory and conversational tone in companion apps. Specifically I am trying to understand if a dense narrative backstory produces better emotional consistency than keeping the instructions strictly inside the system prompt area. Sometimes my companion starts drifting into generic assistant mode if the backstory gets too cluttered with worldbuilding details instead of relational cues. I am curious how you all structure your characters. Do you prefer writing deep lore or do you focus strictly on behavioral rules? Have you noticed any specific formatting tricks that prevent the AI from forgetting core personality traits after a few dozen messages? I want to hear what approaches work best for maintaining a steady sense of identity over time.

My bad for phrasing it weirdly earlier. I meant I am testing how memory handles lore versus rules over long stretches, not that the app literally forgets everything instantly.

Totally agree with this approach. It keeps them grounded.

No matter what you write they eventually loop the same phrases.

From what I have gathered through months of tinkering, writing the personality in first person inside the custom instructions works way better than third person lore dumps. When the companion reads things from its own perspective it tends to stay in character much longer without drifting. You also want to keep the sentence structure simple so the neural net does not get confused during high token load situations.

First person phrasing changed everything for me too. Huge difference.

Shorter prompts usually win in my experience.

I just use a mix of both and hope for the best.

Only if your prompts are too basic. Try adding negative constraints.
