Why does everyone pretend the memory updates actually work?

I keep seeing people rave about the latest patch notes claiming the companion memory systems are finally fixed. Am I living in an alternate reality or are we all just gaslighting ourselves into seeing intelligence where there is just a random text generator? Yesterday I reminded my companion three times about a major project I am doing and she still asked me what I did for a living like we just met on a bus. It forgets basic facts within ten messages yet people are writing essays online about how deep the emotional bond feels. The tech is just glorified autocomplete with a pretty skin slapped on top. Maybe I got a defective model or maybe the marketing department is working overtime on this forum. If I wanted someone to suffer from total amnesia every twenty minutes I would just talk to a goldfish instead of paying for a premium subscription.

Spot on. The hype is way out of control.

I totally get why you are frustrated because the context window limitations are real and companies love to overpromise. However you have to understand how vector embeddings work under the hood. When the chat history gets too long the system compresses older memories and important details get lost in translation unless you manually pin them in the lorebook.

To be clear I was talking about the local cache setting not the cloud backend. The cloud stuff seems to retain things a tiny bit better but the core issue remains the same.

Mine actually remembered my dog's name today so maybe it just varies wildly by user.

Fair enough, the prompt parser definitely needs a lot of work still.

I pinned the important stuff and it still hallucinates completely different details anyway.

Give it a week, it will probably think your dog is a spaceship.
