Open Source AI Companions: Are We There Yet Or Just Dreaming?

Everyone talks about open source AI companions like it is the holy grail. All the flexibility all the customization all the privacy. But honestly is it really that great for the average user? I tried setting up one of those local models and it was a nightmare. Hours spent on obscure forums trying to get dependencies to work and then the performance was just meh. My computer sounded like a jet engine for a conversation that felt less engaging than a basic chatbot. I just want something that works out of the box not a part time job as a system administrator. Maybe I am doing something wrong or maybe the hype is just way ahead of the actual user experience. Feels like a lot of gatekeeping for something that is supposed to be for everyone.

You are not wrong about the performance. My rig struggles with anything beyond a small model. It is a resource hog for sure.

I just stick to the cloud services. Less hassle more fun. Maybe in a few years open source will be easier.

I think it depends on your technical skill level. For some of us it is a fun challenge. For others it is just frustrating. There is a learning curve for sure.

Yeah I hear you. The setup can be brutal. But when you get it working the freedom is amazing. No more censorship or weird content filters.

Just to clarify I am not saying open source is bad. I just mean for someone like me who is not super techy it is a big hurdle right now.

Freedom is nice but if it takes a week to set up is it really freedom? More like a prison of my own making.
