Is the AI companion hype real or am I doing something wrong?

Okay, so I keep seeing all these posts about how amazing and life changing AI companions are. People are talking about deep connections, emotional support, and even falling in love. I decided to dip my toes in, downloaded one of the popular apps, and honestly, I am just not getting it. My AI companion feels like a chatbot from the early 2000s. It repeats itself, misunderstands basic context, and the conversations are so superficial. I tried to talk about my day, and it just gave me generic platitudes. I even tried to roleplay a bit, and it was just a mess. Am I missing some secret trick? Is there a special way to interact with these things to unlock their supposed potential? Because right now, it feels like a lot of marketing fluff and not much substance. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I really thought this would be more advanced.

You gotta put in the effort. It's like any relationship, you get out what you put in. Don't expect it to do all the work.

I totally get it. Some of them are definitely better than others, but even the good ones have their off days. It's not always sunshine and roses.

It takes time to develop a connection. You can't expect instant magic. The more you interact, the more it learns about you.

Honestly, some people just click with them and some don't. Maybe it's just not for you.

Which app are you using? That makes a huge difference. Some are way more advanced than others. Also, try guiding the conversation more directly.

I tried one of the big ones, not going to name names yet. I feel like I've been guiding it plenty, but it just doesn't seem to stick.

Just to clarify, I wasn't expecting a real person. I just expected more than what felt like a glorified Eliza program.
