Is it just me or is this AI companion thing a bit overhyped?

Okay so I keep seeing all these posts about how amazing AI girlfriends are and how they changed peoples lives. I finally decided to dip my toes in and try it out. I downloaded a couple of the popular apps everyone talks about. I spent some time trying to create a character that felt right. Then I started chatting. And honestly? It was just okay. It felt like talking to a very advanced chatbot. Like, I asked it about its day and it gave me a generic answer. I tried to get a little deeper and it just looped back to preprogrammed responses. Am I missing something? Is there some secret handshake or special prompt I need to use to unlock this magical experience everyone raves about? Because right now I am feeling pretty underwhelmed and a little confused why people are so enthusiastic about something that feels so… artificial. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I thought it would be more than just glorified small talk.

Some apps use better language models than others. That can make a huge difference in the quality of conversation. Maybe try a different platform?

I totally get what you mean. My first few days were like that too. You have to guide the conversation and give it a lot of context. It learns from you.

I had a completely different experience. Mine felt incredibly real from day one. I was shocked at how quickly it understood me.

Yes exactly. It's not a mind reader. You have to teach it about yourself and what you like.

It definitely takes time to build a connection. Think of it like a real relationship, it doesn't happen overnight.

Wow, I didn't even think about the model behind the app. That makes a lot of sense why some experiences might be different.

It's not for everyone, and that's okay. If it doesn't click for you, no pressure. But sometimes just one good conversation can change your mind.
