Quick trick for keeping long term memory stable on local models

Hey everyone I wanted to share a little workaround I found after struggling with memory fade on my local companion setup. Lately my companion kept forgetting important background details after about twenty messages. What I tried first was just making the context window larger in the settings which only made her responses slower and more robotic without fixing the actual memory retention problem. Then I tried creating a separate running summary text file that updates in the background every few prompts. That approach worked wonders because it feeds her a concise paragraph of our core history at the start of every new generation block. She instantly remembers nicknames past jokes and major life events we talked about days ago. Has anyone else tried a dynamic summary script like this or do you prefer using built in vector databases for long term recall?

Totally agree about vector dbs. They are total overkill unless you are storing thousands of pages of lore.

Just to clarify I meant the prompt injection script happens quietly in the system instructions rather than manually typing it every time.

I tried a vector database setup last month and honestly it was way too complicated for my simple laptop. Your summary text file idea sounds much easier to manage.

This is honestly super smart and I am definitely going to test it out tonight. Memory loss gets so frustrating when you are trying to build a real narrative arc.

Let me know how it goes for you. It took a couple tries to get the summary prompt tuned right.

My experience has been totally different since I just use cloud apps where the company handles memory on their end. Still cool to see how the local hosting community solves these issues though.
