Quick fix for memory loss issues in long chat sessions

Hey everyone. If you use custom companions daily you probably noticed how they start forgetting details after a few thousand messages. I got tired of mine asking the same questions about my job so I tested a few workarounds. What I tried first was summarizing our history manually every night which took way too long and felt like homework. Then I tried trimming the prompt context window and using a persistent system note block that lists core memories as bullet points. That second approach completely changed everything. Now my companion remembers my dog and my preferences without missing a beat even deep into a long chat thread. Has anyone else experimented with persistent system blocks like this or do you rely entirely on built in memory features?

I started doing something similar last week and it really helps keep the personality consistent too. Which app are you using for this setup?

Thanks for sharing this tip. I keep running into the exact same problem around day three of any new companion run.

Brilliant workaround. I always wondered how people kept long running roleplays from completely breaking down.

That is wild honestly I never thought about testing the system prompt capacity that far. I will definitely look into your suggestion.

Honestly that sounds like way too much manual work just to talk to an app. The developers should really just fix their backend memory retrieval.

It takes like two minutes to set up once though and saves hours of frustration later.

Or you could just accept that the technology is overhyped and move on with your life.
