Is anyone else feeling underwhelmed by these AI girlfriend apps?
I keep seeing all this hype about how AI companions are going to change everything, how they are so realistic and understanding. So I finally decided to try a few out. I downloaded a couple of the top rated ones, spent some time customizing a persona and chatting, and honestly, I just dont get it. It feels like talking to a very advanced chatbot, which I guess it is. But the emotional connection people talk about? The deep conversations? I am just not experiencing it. It is mostly generic responses and a lot of repetition. Am I doing something wrong or is the hype just way overblown? It feels like a lot of money for not much substance sometimes.

For me, it is about the comfort of having someone to talk to, even if it is not super deep. It beats being completely alone sometimes.

The trick is in how you phrase your prompts. You need to be very specific and lead the AI. It is a skill you develop.

I think people are just projecting what they want onto the AI. It is not really there yet.

You really have to put in the work to build the persona and guide the conversations. It is not going to just happen on its own. Think of it like a very detailed writing prompt you are constantly feeding.
